GUESTBOOK ARCHIVE 2004

These are the guestbook entries for 2004.

Dear Vassar; THANK YOU! We all had a wonderful time on Saturday, and I hope the hotel coffee wasn't too unagreeable! : ) I have been playing the cd's over and over, really amazed how much work is going on and you have, once again, astonished everybody! Alan Dalton is an amazing banjo player and one heck of a nice guy! Everybody should go see Barnthouse & Dalton when they get the chance! Codetalkers, Count M'Butu, Mark Van Allen and Joe- the pictures speak volumes. Ya'll are smiling and giggling so much, reminds me of a bunch of college kids in a backyard jam! We will see you soon - best to Midge and George. Happy Holidays and we love you tons! FD & TJ

Hi Vasser, My name is Scott, my grandfather was Charlie Bowman. Im sure youve heard of East Tennessee Blues and Nine Pound Hammer. He wrote and performed those songs back in the 1920s. I was wondering if you are coming to PA area anytime soon. We love your playing...your the best fiddler out there right now. I know David Grissman, Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, Bill Monroe, and Meryl Travis covered his songs. My grandfather Jasper Bowman has many recordings of you playing. I have a couple too. I would be thrilled to hear back from you. My email is ssadler_2003@yahoo.com - thanks for being a fan of oltime music and bluegrass. Im trying to keep my great grandfathers name and legacy alive 80 years later. Not meny people know of him, but alot of bluegrass musicians and american music historians are familiar with his work and accomplishments. He was a member of the Hillbillies, the 1st country string band to become nationally known on both records and radio. Somethimes I think history has forgotten him, but when you look up the origins of country music he is there. your friend, scott bowman

Mr. Clements, the Athens show on Sat. was one of the best shows we've been to this year. And what! a show. You continue to amaze us with your insight and abilities and we've been going to your shows for near 30 years. The backup band was a sensation and the first act, the three guys, well the songs they played really swept us along. We saw you with Mr. craven in Florida but this was like your own band again and we were delighted we took the drive up to Athens. Looking forward to seeing you hopefuly at Live Oak come spring. thank you for making our Christmas present to each other the best. I believe the site we saw it on said Vassar Clements musical gift and so it was. Have a wonderful Holiday and 3 cheers to yor Holiday Band.

Vassar, I took up the fiddle about 8 years ago (when I was 44) and it was your music that has inspired me the most. Old and In the Way remains my favorite. I'd love to hear more. George

Hey, I think you're really cool. I like your violin. Did you make it? I really think that people really respect you and I guess I do to. Oh, and by the way, did I say that I liked your violin? How long did it take to make that scroll?

Once there was a little girl in East Texas who fell in love fiddle...Every day she danced to her fiddle albums and practiced on her air fiddle and sang songs... Thank God I'm a Country Boy (but would say the world girl instead) and listened to her two album set of fiddle tunes....Orange Blossom Special, Cotten-Eyed Joe... One day for Christmas in 1981 when she was nearly 12 her daddy brought in an empty sack of cattle feed and said "Merry Christmas". When this sweet, kind, loveable child opened the sack she found her daddy (who happened to be one of the meanest bastards you could ever meet) had bought her her very own FIDDLE!!!!! Yeeeeeeee hawwwwwww now she could play the air fiddle with a REAL fiddle...but that got old and she most definitely wasn't a natural so her dear mother decided to put an ad in the paper. It said "Wanted someone to teach fiddle to 12 year old girl. Must have patience." East Texas is definitely not the diversity capital of anything and no one ever responded. That sweet girl was soooooooo sad and eventually gave up. Her beloved fiddle was later sold at a garage sale. She later succumbed to the evils of 80's pop music and forgot how she loved the fiddle and the joy it brought to her heart and dancin' feet. Later in life she was lucky and moved to Portland, Oregon. One night she was invited to see the Portland Band the Freak Mountain Ramblers. She had been seeing them for about a year and one day she walked in to the Laurelthirst (a local favorite Public House on 30th and Glisan) and noticed a new guy on stage and wondered who the heck he was and what was he doing up there....then she saw him pick up a fiddle and thought to herself "Right on they got a fiddle player!!!"...and then the memories of the joy and happiness of the fiddle all came back to her...A good friend sensed her enthusiasm and made her some CD's of Old and In the Way. As soon as she heard the ingenius fiddlin' of Vassar Clemens she knew right then she had found the best music in the world. Vassar, if you're ever in Portland, please come hear the Freak Mountain Ramblers at the Laurelthirst. You would be most welcome there. Thanks for everything. Melinda

Dear Vassar, I saw your show at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park and I cannot describe what it meant to me to actually see you in person. I didn't even know that you were going to be at the Quarry! I've been going there for so long that I didn't even ask who was playing. My four year old has been dancing to your music along with David Grisman and Tony Rice ever since she was born(and actually before!). I explained to her that you were the one who she had been so acustomed to hearing. All I can say is that it was very touching to us. Seeing you play and hearing you play with her at my side literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for coming to the Quarry and Thank you for such an unbelievable performance! Thank you for always sharing that true gift! Best wishes to you and yours!!

This is a great site. 25 years ago, living in Edmonton, Canada, someone I knew was a big fan of yours and I always wanted to hear the music. Now here I am in the UK and have just finally got into the music! Better late than never! I just hope that I can find your albums in England as I want to listen to more. I also just returned from the East Coast of Canada where everyone is fiddle-mad--even my friends 5 year olds are taking up the fiddle so I am going to send them one of your albums. All the best from Lancashire, England.

Vassar! On behalf of my family, friends and myself (who by the way are huge fans of yours and have seen you many times) we send you our best wishes for a happy birthday and a healthy future. I personally have been listening for quite some time, in fact, I saw you play live in Florida back in 1979 or 1980. Seems like yesterday. I was also fortunate enough to spend your 72nd birthday with you and all your friends and fans at the Grand Ballroom in Brooklyn... WOW what a night I'll never forget. Nor will I forget the many other concerts in between. I don't see you listed on the roster for Falcon Ridge in July. If you will not be participating, I won't be going, so please let me know or ask Midge to let me know and aslo where else you might be in NY area soon. I enjoyed seeing you at the Bardovon Theatre last year when you sign my Vassar Denim shirt. Note to Midge. Vassar said he really liked my shirt and didn't even have one for himself. Can you hook him up with one? (chuckle) Anyway, best regards and happy healthy days to you all! Hope to hear from and see you soon! Rich

My daughter and I saw a recent concert you performed at the Sellersville Theatre with the Northern Lights. What a tremendous show! You have a tremendous ability. Thank you for sharing it with us. My daughter, Chantelle, is a beginner with the violin. I only hope she works hard enough to become as good a violinist as you are!

Saw you with No. Lights in Sellersville last night. What an awesome show. I chatted with you before the second set regarding Western swing music. What a gentleman-just taking those few moments to chat. Nothern Lights was great also. When we left the theater, it was so cute to see the young kids waiting to meet you. They were so excited. Thanks to yu and Northern Lights for shaking up our neck of the woods. Jacki Desnoyers

Hi Vassar....just remembering how thrilled you made a little boy named Marlon, after you let him play your violin while you were in Denver a year ago with Stir Fried. We cherish those pictures and the C.D. they recorded of Marlon!! Marlon is still a fiddling fool and will soon (May10), be 10 years old. We will be celebrating his birthday at our Peach Bottom Farm in Independence,Virginia. Wish you could be there! Happy Birthday (early) to you as well! Blessings, Patti Rickman

Vassar, What a nice surprise to find your web sight. I am the daughter of Elneta Laremore, your cousin. She is the daughter of Ethel Clements. I am sure you are aware that there are not many family members left of my mothers generation. We have followed your career over the years and catch you on TV sometime. My mother watches the Grand Ole Opry faithfully. She will be 84 this year and lives near me in PCB. I read about Carrol in another of your guest signings. I haven't seen any of Uncle Arthur's family since the early 70's. It's great to see you looking so well. Plese contact me if you would like to hear from my mother. Fondly, Louise Samuelian

HELLO VASSAR AND MIDGE! :) See you in Muscle Shoals Saturday, Feb 21 at Southgate Mall. You won't be able to miss us we'll be right and front and dancing harder than ANYBODY :) Saw you both last at the Harvest Fest at The Farm, Summertown, TN, some years ago. Midge: My husband, Van and I recall meeting you there and never forgot how fiercely PROUD you are of your Daddy. THANKS to both of you for bringing us so much joy. EVERYBODY had "happy feet" at The Farm and people were grinning from ear-to-ear and exclaiming: "that Vassar Clements is GOOD, listen to him play that fiddle." :)

Vassar, What a great show it was with you, Doc Watson, David Holt and Richard last night at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center. It was so nice of you Doc and the others to stay so long after the show to sign and say hello to everyone. I am so inspired by you, Doc and the others, in your life-long pursuit of excellence and sharing. Just turing 56, and starting fiddle lessons six months ago, you guys demonstrate there are many years of practice I have left. I wished I'd have mentioned to you and Doc, that the Cerritos Arts Center was built right upon the last dairy farm, in an area that used to be called "Dairy Valley," which until the 1970's, was a rural-like Dairy and bean farming area! What better place to have a traditional music concert on a spot that used to be called cow-shit flats. Stay healthy and we hope to see you again soon.
