Dear Vassar...It's been far too long since dad Tex or I have seen you, and I only just now have heard of your illness. My prayers are with you. I hope you get this message. I'm sorry that I don't have a better way to get in touch with you...maybe Tex does and I'll speak to him tommorrow- I'm sure he'd want to get in touch and send his wishes as well. It seems like just yesterday that we were at the festivals, you at my dad up all night playing while I slept in the back of his car at some old field in Berryville or Bean Blossam. Those days were the best. Take care, Vassar. Jody Logan

Vasser, our band ZEN has played many festivals with you and we've spoken on many occasions. Many years ago, Bonnie, the harmonica and guitarist in the band was diagnosed with cancer and given less than 6 months to live. Through the power of music, the band, good doctors and positive thoughts, she has been completely free of cancer for years. We will be dedicating every show we do to you, Vasser.

Hello Friends, This update as of March 30th on Vassar's condition. Hopefully tomorrow Vassar can go home for a few days. He has been in the hospital since March 14th receiving treatment for his condition. Today Vassar received a blood transfusion in order to boost his weakened white and red blood cell counts. If all goes well and his counts increase, Vassar will receive another round of Chemo next week. He has asked us to THANK each and every person who is thinking of him, posted to his guestbook, sent cards and letters of encouragement, as well as the phone calls of support. He asked for us to pass on a blanket THANK YOU to everyone since there is no way he could ever respond to the overwhelming kindness the world is giving back to him. He is also very thankful for all the artists, promoters, and other music industry professionals that have come forward with their support. Folks like Randy + Beth Judy who made it a point to ask for kind thoughts throughout the recent Suwannee Springfest, folks like Tony Rice who drove the night to lend his support to Vassar, and the others who have let Vassar know if he needed anything, they would stop their tours to come to help. Great friends of a great man. Please keep the prayers coming, as well as the letters and cards as they are all deeply appreciated. No phone calls please.

Hey Vassar, I've loved your fiddling for at least 30 years, you inspired me to take up the blasted thing myself! I think of you talking about your dog on the porch when you were learning to play - I knew I was getting somewhere when mine stopped leaving the room! You would have loved hearing Joe Craven at the Savannah Music Festival this weekend. Dawg dedicated Opus 38 to you, and they really brought down the house. Words can't describe Joe's solos, though, you would have loved it.I'm praying for you to get well dear heart, I've still got to get you to sign my 80 year old fiddle that I inherited from my dad. I'll be looking for you at MagFest! Love, Kim

Vassar, you played at the Poconos Music Festival one year when I was vending. A friend of mine went along to help, he had just made his first fiddle and had it with him. He watched your set and was awed. After you played, he went up and talked to you, he asked if you would take a look at his fiddle. He said, "I don't want to bother you, but would you please look at my fiddle and tell me if it is any good." You picked out a short song, then played it like mad, and said to him, "Boy, you go home and make more of these fiddles!" He walked around on a cloud the rest of the weekend. And, he did go home and make more. He also now makes dulcimers and harps. You are such a great inspiration to so many people wether you know it or not. The love keeps growing. It's very infectious. Wishing you the best and sending light and love, Sandy

Dear Vassar, I have enjoyed your music for more years than I like to admit. I used to play a lot of contests here in Texas. Of course, that was when Terry & Dale Morris were just better than most of us. Still had a heck of a good time though. I have been fortunate enough to see you live twice. Once in Dallas I took about three couples to see you who thought I was crazy-until you came out lit your pipe and blew them away. I have been lucky to play a few songs with Chubby Wise,Keith Coleman, tne Morris', and even Mark O'Conner when he was a little kid with his white fiddle. But your sound and style has always been my favorite. Like all virtuosos, you make it look so easy, while us mortals are lucky to figure out one or two of your licks every five or ten years. You are truly the best. I was sad to hear of your cancer-but please know that in 1979 they told one of my six brothers that he had 9 months to live. He had Hotchkins. Well he has been cancer free since 1982. The surgery and radiation were tough on him. But no one ever said life was all roses. I will pray for your speedy recovery. I know that I will have a lot of company. It will be the world's biggest prayer jam. Get well soon. We need you and your axe back with us. Lots of love and prayers, Russell Ridge

Vassar, One of the highlights of Leah's music career was when you asked her to play Old Joe Clark with her at Crystal Plohman's fiddle camp. Leah was 9 at the time. She now has a wonderful band and stays as busy fiddlin as appropriate for a 11 year old. She has been playing with Buddy Spicher, Jim Woods, and is still fiddlin with Crystal. Thanks for spreading the joy of music in our child. Joe

Vassar,
Thanks for your music over all the years. I first heard of you when a college buddy of mine played me his copy of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." Your version of Orange Blossom Special was brilliant, despite the odds against anyone being able to bring anything new to that song at that point. I've owned a few of your albums over the years, and always look at album credits to see if you're playing with someone else. In my lifetime, you've been the gold standard for bluegrss fiddle playing.
God bless.

Dear Vassar,
I have a funny tale to share with you in the aftermath of this Easter weekend's extremely WET Suwannee Springfest.
Laughter is certainly the best medicine...
Our five-year-old son woke up quite early Sunday morning in our pop-top camper and looked out the dampened windows. The concert field was still six feet under water. The birds were sweetly singing in the live oaks. and there was an immense peace and quiet through all of the music park.
As only an innocent child can do, he threw open the door, and called out as loud as a proud rooster "Hey everybody, wake up! Its NOT RAINING!!!! "
I guess you heard about the challenges faced by the musicians and campers over the weekend as stages were moved, schedules were adjusted, and everything was covered with mud. But still we all smiled, and it worked out. The spirit of the Suwannee was flowing through us...
You are certainly in our hearts and conversations! Take care of yourself and surround yourself with abundant LOVE~~~~

Dear Vassar,
I first heard you play that lively fiddle at the Florida Folk Festival a few years ago. Since then, I've heard you several times at the Suwannee Springfest. Everyone missed you this weekend and sent several songs out for you. There was a lot of healing power in those songs! But this was the weekend to miss if you had to miss just one. It rained all weekend and the amphitheatre and meadow stages turned into lakes. Everything had to be shifted around to different places. We love you and hope you will have a successful treatment regimen. I'm a chemo nurse and it's not all as bad as some would make you think. Get the book "Love, Medicine, and Miracles" by Bernie Siegel and read it. Positive attitudes do wonders in recovery. Love and blessings, Sally B.

My wife Valarie and I had a chance to talk with Vassar backstage in Richmond VA this past summer when he was touring with the John Cowan Band. We enjoyed that conversation immensely as we have enjoyed Vassar's music throughout the years. Valarie, has been a fan since the 1970s and talked with Vassar about N. Florida bluegrass festivals back then. What a treat to share her rememberances with him!
We both send out our heartfelt thoughts and prayers for Vassars full recovery.

Dear Vassar-
I am very sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis. My wife and I are both nurses and I know the kind of ordeal you are currently facing. I am praying for you to have strength and to get better.
I first heard your music in 1975, when I was 18. I was a "Deadhead"- my friends and I were hanging out in the woods behind our street. The rock radio station we usually listened to had nothing good on- so I was "surfing" the stations looking for something good to play. I came across a station with you playing "Night Train" from the 'Vassar' album. It totally blew all of us away. Since that moment, one I have often thought of over the years, I have loved your music.
Later that year 'Old and in the Way' came out and my bluegrass vistas were opened....(Garcia had a way of showing us new stuff we ordinarily would not have been exposed to)
I am now 48 years of age. I have seen you play whenever I have been able to ever since that day in 1975. Missed the Mayville festival last year as I had to work but plan on going this year. Two years ago you shook my hand after the show in Ithaca NY- thank you for being so gracious.
You were one of the people who showed me the world beyond popular rock music- the world of music that REALLY matters.
I now play both mandolin and a little fiddle- I play the mando almost every day- trying to not sound like some rock and roll guy from up North who really can't play. It's tough- frustrating at times- but I always remember what Ron Thomason once told me- "have fun".
I hope it wasn't presumptuous of me to write so much about my experiences- I know you are probably weakened from your treatments and generally feel awful at this point. I just wanted you to know we are up here praying and hoping for your recovery. Thank you for inspiring me throughout my life- thank you for opening the door to the bluegrass world for me- since Jerry passed away it's the only musical world I inhabit now- the best people- living breathing American music- genuine, real, and VERY hard for me to play.........but I enjoy being part of something that is actually happening now and is filled with so many good people. Thank you. -Bob Pretsch

Vassar,
You are a good man who's music has touched a multitude of people. However it is not your music that makes you good it's the faith you have in our savior Jesus Christ not only in word but in action and living. Your kindness and humility are a direct representation of the love He has for us and how He wants us to act towards one another. You have been an inspiration to me and although I haven't seen you in a few years and you may not even remember who I am please know that I love you and will never forget how your music touched me deep in my soul. Happy Easter 2005 and I will definitely be praying for you. I also ask others to pray because where two or more come to agreement in the name of Jesus we are heard and answered by the father IF our faith does not fail. JC is the healer.

Vassar,
Our prayers and wishes are with you! I just wanted you to know that you have been a great influence for me musically. But for your playing in Old and in The Way, I probably never would have listened to bluegrass. But because of that band, I am now a huge fan of yours and of the style.
I was lucky enough to see you play live in Texas 10 years ago at a blue grass festival with the reformed Old and in the Way and the show was fantastic!
You were the elder statemen, impecably dressed and unbelievably taleneted. There was an aura, almost a glow, around you as you played. It was truly a treat and a memory that brings me much happiness.
Hang in there, we love man!

Vassar, you are such a private man but have so little privacy. Please don't mind that I share our conversation with others who love and care about you. When you told me your diagnosis I was terribly upset. You said "Don't count me out yet!" When I said I was afraid, you said not to be because you were afraid enough for both of us. Please don't be afraid Vassar! Every day I look at this book and see how many people are with you in spirit. I know you don't see these entries right now but I hope you are aware at just how amazing this outpouring of love and affection is. Your simple yet profound Christian Faith must be your foundation now, I am sure. I thank you for your Witness during our conversations in this regard. I thank you too for being in my life as such a positive example, so kind and gentle and good.

I guess like a lot of people my age in the NJ/NY area, I came to know you through Old & In The Way. But it wasn't until I saw you in a church basement somewhere I think in Bergen County NJ that I really started to appreciate your music.
At that show I bought a red Vassar Clements baseball cap. It simply says Vassar with your face inlaid in the top of a fiddle.
I was wearing the hat one day while golfing and someone who joined us asked if I had someone who attended Vassar. At first I didn't know what he meant, then it dawned on me that he was reading my hat. I said no, its Vassar Clements. He gave me the strangest look. I guess he was among the uninitiated.
Thank you for all the good times I've had listening to you play.

Vassar, I just want to let you know that you are in our prayers. I also wanted to tell you that you indirectly influenced my music playing. It seems our families have touched one another through the years.
Do you remember Austin and Leonard (Barefoot) Bullard? Barefoot was my father and he passed away two years ago in May. He and Austin told me of stories of when you lived in or around Huntsville, Al. Oh the stories may have been stretched a bit but the music was still good. I did not hear of them until I brought home and OAITW CD and played it for my dad and he asked if that was Vassar playing the fiddle. Then him and my Uncle Austin went on and on about tales of going places and playing of which I won't go into detail on where anyone else can read it. :)
I just pray that you get better so many more people can enjoy you God given ability to play the fiddle.
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!
How does it go Vassar?

We are praying for your complete recovery. I've been a fan since I was a teenager and discovered bluegrass, then got a copy of "Superbow" on 8-track (man, I wish I still had that).
In any case, keep fightin' and we'll keep praying!

vassar,
along with many others, my first foray into roots music was through jerry garcia's participation in old and in the way. from that point on, i have been a fan of all sort of roots music and a variety of other genres. i've been lucky enough to see you perform and to hear tons of your music. your heart seems to pour through each note, and when watching you play, the joy and sincerity come through. you have brought so much joy to so many. i wish you health and joy. let others' good wishes be medicine for you during this trying time.
peace vassar,

i don't understand why we have to go through what you are faced with, but we all must do so at some point in time. i have been a big fan of yours for so long. i recently purchased aerotakes as i rediscover the roots of americana music. i am 44 years old and i am in the process of learning where our musical heritage comes from. our good lord blesses the masses with something from above ocassionally and uses people on earth as the conduit to do this. thank you for the many hours of pleasure you have brought us. people are searching for something real on earth and i can unequovically say you touched upon that. just on the other side is paradise for belivers. bless you for making life tolerable if not joyous through your music. i wish i could have known you personally. again, thank you and god bless.

I'm very sad to hear the news about vassar. to me he was and still is the best fiddle player in the world. I was born in 1958, brought up in montana, but we didnt just listen to country. we listened to charlie daniels, marshall tucker band, nitty gritty dirt band, hank sr., and jr. one of my favorites that you did, and I'll never forget it, was orange blossom special.what tune. and what a master to play it. I havent heard it in about 20 years, so guess I'll have to go buy the c.d.. I used to have it on LP, but alas, records are a thing of the past. you've had quite a career already, and hope to god you can still perform. what a waste it would be to lose you. hope you make a full recovery, and by god come to montana and play. your intensity really gets the crowd going, no matter if your playing with someone, or by yourself. as you can imagine, we dont get a lot of celebrities hhere,( unless they want to buy up all our land). many famous people here own huge chunks of montana. I guess we're found out. we used to be the last great state, until too many celebs found out about us.. anyway, hope you have a full recovery, and keep montana in the back of your mind would you? I am at this time trying to get goose creek symphony here, but what can I do? I'm just a small town white boy. but I think if more people heard you guys, the more fame glory and money you would have. I have 3 goose creek albums.oops, I mean cds. remember, albums are a thing of the past. what the hell is the world coming to? anyway, my best to you and yours. truly. hope to see you someday, Scott

Dear Vassar,
I wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time in your life. I have been coming to the Spirit of the Suwanee for four years now and I want to know that you have made this event magical. My friends and myself enjoy spreading the joy and the love of music to others so that they may hear and truely listen to the music that you have created that has touched our hearts and our souls. I will keep you and my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for the way that you have touched our lives. I wanted you to know in 1994 I found out that I was in acute renal failure; due to having only one kidney. I was on Dialysis for sometime and then after many surgeries and procedures.. my brother donated his kidney to me and saved my life. During the time of lengthy treatments I found that having a very positive attitude about my recovery along with faith..helped me through. Please know that you are loved and respected by many and that we all look forward to hearing you spread that beautiful music to those who are young and old.

Dear Vassar, I am sorry to hear of your recent illness, I found out from Garrett's son
Jackie. It made me realize that we have known each other for over 50 years when we were
in the army and playing in special service in 53 in Germany.I always admired watching you when you were playing and I have tried to follow your career on your web site. I was very proud to tell other musicians and friends that I had worked with one of the greatest fiddle players in the world.

Hello Vassar,
Its Ron Penque, bass player in Ripple and new bass player in Stir Fried. When John Broderson of tallboys entertainment asked me who is this guy Vassar and should I book him? well, you know I said "Hell Yes!" That led to you working with Ripple for all those years and then it led to you joining Stir Fried and playing with all the other great bands in this New York New Jersey area including the Zen Tricksters. You are the best Vassar, I learned a lot from you and will for ever keep the memories in heart and mind. May the circle be unbroken Vassar, all my love to you and yours, your friend,

Dear Vassar,
We're so sorry to hear that you are in need of such treatment. We sure hope that it will do you all the good that is needed to get on top of all this!!
Being involved in acoustic music for some forty years, I'm a great fan of your music and I sure appreciate all you have done to develop our music into what it is today.
I fist saw you "live" in Nashville in 1978, or so. You we're playing with an electric unit, and I seat speachless through two shows. Your performance and music were just stunning.
As a friend of Paul Craft's, I had the preasure of releasing recordings on my Strictly Country Records label that you all recorded in 1972. This included you, John, Norman, Tut, Ben Eldridge, Mike Auldridge, and a few others. Not sure if you ever got a copy from Paul, or so. I will mail you one this week.
Vassar, we are thinking of you and we wish you the very best and the greatest thing I can imagon now is to see you shortly back on stage just doing what you are great at, Playing fiddle as alway. Vassar, we are counting on you.

Vassar had done really well with his first few rounds of chemotherapy - he has an appetite, rosey cheeks and of course some of the usual discomforts. He has heard about the MASS of love on his message board and says this:
"Tell them all I love them and thank you for thinking of me and sending me their thoughts and prayers. And when I get home, I'll try and read the messages." From the family: "We know that there are so many people who care about[him]and we do appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. We have a great support system out there, and at home as well. Please know that we would like to answer all the calls, but it is impossible at this time." They simply ask that everyone be patient and they'll be back in touch and will let everyone know how he's doing. His spirits are UP and knows you are thinking of him! It is unlikely V-Man will make any April dates, possibly May as well. It's still too early to know yet how everything will 'take' but I am very optimistic. He has 'round the clock attention and Midge is keeping a healthy watchful eye on him. XO, Farley
ps. V-Man, XOXO!
