These are the guestbook messages from 1999.
Mr Clements, So nice to see you getting the recognition you deserve on the via the web. My wife and I have been fans since the mid 70's. I was fortunate to see you perform at the Univ of MO during a show with John McKuen doing strictly duets. We live in the country here in MO. If you are ever in the neighborhood, drop us a line. We would love to provide you (and your wife if she is with you)with a home-cooked meal while you are on the road. (we are fairly close to Columbia MIssouri Sincerely, Bill and Liz Huston

Dear Vassar, Around summer or fall of 1996 you played in Toronto at the The Opera House. My band at the time, Jughead, opened for you. I was the banjo player. You and Bob Harris were kind enough to ask me to join you for an Old And In The Way set. That was one of the most memorable nights of music I have ever experienced. The other was when Bill Monroe invited me up to play with him. I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for a precious memory that I will always carry with me. Your recordings continue to inspire me. I wish you all the best in the new year. Respectfully, Christopher Quinn

Hello Mr. Clements, Looking over your web page, I must say kudos to your web designers. I remember the first time I saw and heard you play; Minnie Pearl had just intrduced you on "THE GRAND OLE OPRY" in the mid to late seventies. When you finished playing that magnificent fiddle I remember turning to my father and saying "is he the best fiddle player in the world?" I've grown up since then and listen to bluegrass often nad still amazed at the sound and grace of your style. Only recently have I had the chance to attend a concert at Ryman (Elvis Costello) sitting there wanting to hear your fiddle with Lester and Earl and Mr. Monroe's sounds. I'm now happy that I'll finally get the chance to see you perform in person; Jan. 22 in Bartlett, TN With Webb Dalton and his gang. Merry Christmas and a happy new millenium. God Bless.

Vassar, I have been a professional symphony violinist for 10 years and gave it all up to come to Tennessee and learn bluegrass. Saw you in Boone, NC this year; the sound guy should have turned you up so you could be heard above the guitar! You are an inspiration to me, learning your "Corrina, Corrina" (man, that 3rd break is a killer!) and "Florida Blues". Do you have any other sheet music books out besides the Matt Glaser fiddle book? Hope to see you soon around the TN/NC area.

I've been a fan of yours since, well, back before the Aereoplane album and buy anything where I see your name on the liner!! Last time I saw you seems like ages ago when you were with John Hartford at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in Western Canada!! All the best.

Dear Vassar, My name is David Williams. We met a few years ago when I promoted a show (as Front Row Entertainment) in Bristol, TN at the Paramount Theatre. The show was one of the best I have ever seen, and that is sayin something. I have done a lot of work over the years as a recording engineer, a road musician, and a promoter among many other facets of the music business. We didn't have a very good house as you might remember but the show was hot none the less. The thing that really sticks out in my mind though is how wonderful you and Millie were to us all and what a great experience it was to spend a day with the both of you. We all felt a sense of personal loss with her passing. We would often talk about her and what a wonderful, real person she was and it certainly was a shock to us. If you remember at all, we had lunch at a place called "Somewhere Else" (which is no longer there) after we did the TV spot for the local NBC affiliate. You and Millie both made us feel at ease and by the time lunch was over we felt like we had know you all our lives. I will carry that experience with me for the rest of my days. I hope you still display the plaque we presented you for lifetime achievement as I thought it very important that more and more people recognize your contribution to music. I have thought about contacting you several times and conveying my condolences but not wanting to bother you I have though better of it. This is a way of letting you know I am thinking of you and that you have been in our hearts and minds through this past year or so. If ya ever get the time drop me a line on the old e-mail and say howdy, it would make my day. I hope you will get to see this little note but if not you are in our prayers always. Your friend, David Williams

Greetings Vassar! It's me, Fred, the banjo player trapped in Prism. Just got back from a nice long summer and starting to rev up our new season here, and stopped by to admire your very beautiful website- compliments to the chef. My wife Kenyon and I had a little boy, Sebastian, on June 27th. We have a few photos of you up on our website, in the Photo Album, if you'd like to check it out- www.theprism.org! Looks like your schedule is pretty full up through Christmas, but if you're passing this way anytime in the new millenium, please give us a call or drop a line in the e-mail- we'll find a weekend for you. All the boys in the "Gap" say hi. Best regards, Fred

I also grew up around country swing. My Dad had a band called The Buckeroos, before Buck Owens hit the scene. During my high school years, a friend had me listen to the Last of the Red Hot Flying Burrito Bros. album. Really did something to me. Thank you for your influence. I can't play fiddle, but I can break a mandolin string now and then. I'm not the best there is, but I sure do love it. Bro. Vassar, I have sent e-mail without knowing exactly how everything worked. I don't guess it got to you. Well, anyway, I really enjoyed visiting with you at Mt. Juliet. A special thank you for the CD's. I have listened to them over and over again. I just talked to sis. Coats. she said Wayne did not have a good day. I urged him to go to a pain clinic. He might get some relief. If not he won't be any worse off than he is now. I noticed that your schedule is about as heavy as one could be. If between our schedules we can get together in Nashville to go to the Grand Ole Opry it will be amazing. However, I hope we can. I am sure that it seems an eternity to you since you lost sis. Millie. I am sure that staying very busy has been good therapy for you. Just don't over do it. If and when your in the Houston area pleas feel free to call us. My number is (281)350-5516. My address is 25403 Lancewood Dr., Spring, TX 77373. I know that you do not know me that well, but if you ever need anything please fell free to call one me. I had better close for now. Vassor, I just wanted to say thanks again for your kindness. I am still high off of the night i was able to "jam" with you and stirfried; i thank you so much for allowing me to undertake such an experience. it is something i will remember for the rest of my life. it was wonderful sharing our different musical styles with one another, you have sparked a whole new way of creative improv in my mind and i am so grateful and excited to work and expand on the ideas. music is such a universal way of communicating, it is so heart-warming to know that we can all experience such energy from one another. i hope to play with you again sometime soon, i'll be in North Carolina from 6/10 to 6/15, then heading to northern New York until 6/26. if there is any possible way we can meet, please let me know (702) 436-4583 thanks again for sharing music with me. have a happy day! Hello there, Vassar. I don't know if you remember me or not, but you used to come and sit in with my band in Anchorage, Alaska. You came up there a couple times back in '84 and '85 to do some shows at the same time that my band was playing in Anchorage. A little club called the Buckaroo used to bring us up from Tucson, and we never thought we'd get to do anything as exciting as to get to play with you on those trips to Anchorage. It's something none of us will ever forget, since you were a hero to all of us, especially myself and our fiddle player, Pete Hicks. I was pretty scratchy on the fiddle back then, but with inspiration from you and a lot of practice, I got to where I could at least fool SOME of the people! I've since quit playing for a living, and I've been out here on an island in the Aleutian chain for several years running a boat on the Bering Sea. I came across your webpage and just wanted to say hello and to let you know that performing with you those times were a real thrill and it's something I'll still be bragging about when I tell my grandchildren. I hope your doing well, and I sure hope that I can get the chance to see you perform again. Take care, Vassar, and keep playing that wonderful fiddle.

I have enjoyed your fiddle playing since I first heard 'Old and in the way' a few years ago. I am a keen fiddle player and performer here in the UK, and my roots are very much in folk and traditional styles. I am from the Scottish Borders and am currently studying music here in London, and take every oppourtonity to perform traditional music in and around college!. I recently attended a couple of workshops in Bluegrass fiddle, run by Bob Winquist, an excellent fiddler from canada, (and a professional viola player). I am keen to learn more about Bluegrass music, and to obtain some of your recordings. I am also hoping to go round some of the music festivals in the U.S, before too long. Prehaps I may make it to one of your gigs sometime. I was delighted to find this web site, and to discover that you are performing regularily. All the best!, from Steve Moffat.

Hi Vassaar,
It was October 1997 and I was on one of the Country Music Hall of Fame's tour Nashville and I saw you recording at Studio B. I was the little 14 year old (the only one in the group) who recognised you when our guide asked. I am interested to find out about what you recording. I love your music and one day I would love to meet you.
Congrats on "Banjoland". You did a brilliant job.

Magnanimous is the essence of Vassar. Thanks so much for the generous and kind attention you've paid to me at Mark O'Connor's camp and again at one of your workshops in Mpls. Perhaps in the great perspective of your life, they may seem small, but in mine and the others with me, your presence has been huge. Just sitting around sipping lemonade and talking about mowing lawns and tuckpointing chimneys was as big a high as the music itself. The jokes with John Hartford. Lunch with you and your extraordinary wife Millie. Thanks so much for all your inspiration and friendship. May your soul feel the same joy and appreciation in return. No doubt that day it reunites with Millie's. In the meantime, we love ya.

I am now sharing your music with my 17 year old nephew who seems to have inherited some of that Clements talent. I hope we will be able to see you in person. Coming to the May 16th show in Seminole, Florida. Have been enjoying your music for many years. Started seeing you when I was in college at Michigan State University. You played a Kiva, a round classroom in the middle of a dorm. The show was amazing and I have been hooked ever since. Actually, you played a week after John Hartford did, and you have been two of my favorites ever since. I see you every chance I get. What a kick Hartford is huh!!! Keep up the great work!! I find that viewing this site is SOMETIMES a very frustrating experience. I have been visiting the site for the last two weeks and I have still not seen any photos! I have also been to the "Millie's Song" page and there is nothing there. If you are going to create and do the up-keep on a "Vasser page", go all out. Your site would be 100% better if you just did a little work on it.
keep up the effort,
thanks.

PAPA: Today you're 71 years young....WOW!! If MOM were here, she would wish you HAPPY BIRTHDAY & say age is just a number & hers was unlisted but your's isn't. I've been trying to tell as many people as I can that you're really 81!! Not working. Kidding aside, when you & MOM married 35 years ago I can truly say you still have the WARMTH OF KINDNESS, PATIENCE & HUMOR you had then. I can't even begin to say how many times in all those years I've heard you say DAD-BIME-IT! Since MOM's death it's been rough for us & today I reflect on MEMORIES of past BIRTHDAYS & CARDS... I'm so very thankful & proud of you. Because I care & LOVE you so much, I wish & pray that you have many more BIRTHDAYS to follow as well as GOOD HEALTH we sometimes take for granted. Happy Birthday to my "PAPA" & don't try & eat your "SNOWBALL CAKE" in one sitting!!!! Lots of Love, MIDGE

Hey everyone! Vassar, I love your website. It looks great. Hey Midge, I now can E-mail you guys. Tell George we've got to get together play soon. I'm sure he's probably got a new "axe". I really liked that "Steve Wariner" model he had. I wished I could have traded him out of it... fer sure. I guess I'll always stick with STRATS.
I really appreciate you and George coming down and going to listen to our band play. It's just a little different music than what you're use to hearing, but it's classic. I really like R & B and Blues, and of course that good ole' Soul and Rock & Roll. When you were dancing at Redstone Arsenal to "Land of a 1000 Dances", it really brought back some good old memories for me when I use to come to Nashville and spend those summers with you all. I thought that was great!
Tell Vassar we are thinking about him and wish him well. I knows he stays awfully busy. We're looking forward to all of you very soon. George just E-mailed me directions to your house in Nashville. We'll come to see ya'll soon. Again, take care and Midge, I love you "MEDAPIG", aka FBI lady (ha!).

Hi Vassar-a voice from your mis-spent youth. I used to
be the Mandolinist for the New Deal String Band,
and we used to have great fun playing all night
long-them were the days. We're running a guitar shop
in Punta Gorda Florida. If you're ever in the
neighborhood, don't get no motel room! Glad you're
doing well.

Vassar: it was wonderful to see and hear you in Nashville recently. I was thrilled that my daughter
Lizzy (Plotkin) finally got to meet her dad's all-
time hero. I hope we can all get together soon so you can hear her play and of course so we can hear you! I was glad to meet Midge and it looks like your daughter is taking very good care of you! I know Millie (and Steve) would be proud. You look great and your fiddle playing was, as always, the finest! Watching Lizzy watch your bow flow so effortlessly was a trip! Take care and be in touch!

Vassar & Midge, Midge, I talked to you a month or so ago about Vassar coming back home to Montana for some dates.
Looks like maybe Sept would be when they would happen. Get back to me & if it's a good time for you we'll
get to work on them. Looks like we could swing maybe 4. We could do them as a four piece like we used to or with
our 9 piece swing band Big Swing. We could do dates as both as well since Dave Griffith, Frank Chiaverini, & I
would be involved in both bands. We get asked a lot when you're coming back up so let's do it. I'll send you a tape
of Big Swing ASAP & anouther great R&B band Dave & I are playing with. Talk to you soon. Micah & Susan send their love.
Bob Overand says hi too. Talk to you soon.

Dear Midge, George, and Vassar,
Enjoyed being up at Jerry & Joyce McGlocklins on New Years. As always Vassar, I enjoyed getting to play some mandolin with you and Jake. You, Benny Martin, Buddy Spicher, and Jerry McGlocklin are my all time favorites. You have a heart of gold to play with people of any caliber of talent and you always make them sound good.
