These are the guestbook messages from 2000.

Hey Vassar, I been listening to "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" with the Dirt Band the last few days. That album will never grow old and you've got some great playing on there. Are you going to Alabama this New Years? If so, perhaps I can hook up with the Wingates and try to see you there, maybe even pick a little. Take Care and all the best to you.

My mother heard your Christmas song "God rest ye merry gentlemen" on KRVN radio station out of Lexington NE. She immediately became a fan of yours. For a long time she has been looking for a copy of your tape. Recently, she asked the radio station to play the song so she could record it on her small portable player. They did play the song for her and she said she was in tears while it played. She had yearned for the song for a long time. Knowing that she loves your music, I am making a print of your website and I will send it to her. I know this will be one of her best Christmas's. Thank you for your wonderful contribution to Country Music

I spoke with Ken Frank just a few minutes ago, and he directed me here to your site. Lord willing, you might remember me as the fellow who took photo #4 in Gallery five. Even if you don't, it's OK; because I have known the sound of your hands on the strings for 30 years. Hearing you play right in front of me was one of the most memorable times of my life. May the LORD bless you and fill your days with joy!

This is a very fine site. I cherish the opertunity I had to play and hang out with you a few years back. I'm back on KOPN in Columbia. I still give you airplay and people still like it. I hope your hemmaroids haven't given you any more trouble since your surgery. I don't talk about that on the air but(or should I say butt) the last time I saw you that was what was going on. I would also like to thank you for the nice things you said about the bluegrass programing we were doing shortly after you were here in, I think it was Bluegrass Now. I do remember you were on the cover. I'll be sure to play some of your music tomorrow and talk up your website if I don't get snowed in. If you see Mike(Supe) Granda tell him I said hi. Bob

Vassar, We were so happy to meet you and Norman Blake at the hotel in Troy. You are as friendly and gracious as you are reputed. I'm sorry I didn't bring any of my instruments along, but there's always next time! Shortly I'll be sending you a bluegrass waltz that I wrote. It would be a dream come true for me if you would play it. Thanks for a great concert and give our thoughts of wellness to John Hartford, Peter and Karen Gennaro

Mr. Clements, I just started learning the violin a month ago. I am very excited. With no music experience, I find it a pure joy. Maybe someday I can come close to your talent. I am orignally from Buffalo,NY. Move to Nashville three years ago. Hopefully by Christmas I will know enough to play some carols. My mother bought me a violin two years ago because I mention how many people are involved in music here in Nashville(no kidding!)and how everywhere we find people playing. I was feeling left out. My wife and I knew we could not afford a violin. My mother offered to buy one and she did. I had it for two years now. I finally bought an instructional video by Mel-Bay. It is doing wonders. My plan is to work hard everyday until Christmas and go up to Buffalo and surprise my mother during Christmas Midnight service. I want to play her favorite song: Ave Maria My mother is getting up there in age and I want to show her how her investment was worth it and how I love the Fiddle. Last year I had a few weeks of lessons from a member of the Nashville Symphony. It got too expensive. Once I finish the instructional video I will give her a call and have her help me fine tune everything. I enjoyed your website and it has been an inspiration!!! I hope to see you next time you perform in Nashville. Save me a ticket!! God Bless! -Victor

hello vassar, my name is mike lima. i'm a 35 year old banjo player from plymouth, ma.(45 min. south of boston).bluegrass music dose'nt exactly flourish in this area although i do head north occasionally to catch a fiddlers contest in vermont.my family enjoys blugrass music and stock car racing(go mark martin #6),both of which are popular down south, die out in this area, and regain popularity again north of here. just my luck!i noticed on your tour dates the closest you are coming is new york.i mentioned the possibility of a trip to my wife but the voice of reason declared it being this close to christmas, and one of my sons having a birthday in december would not be a good idea.well maybe next time.keep up the good work, mike lima

Hey Now! Vassar, I just wanted to share my Joy with you. You see, at the Harvest Fest, before the Sunday a.m. Gospel under the tent, I brought my Daughter, Rachel up to say "Hey Now" to ya. We listen to you alot, she's 3 and she just loves Vassar's sweet fiddle! Well, Rachel was just in Awe of you, as am I, and it was a magical experience for her when she reached out her hand to shake yours and you grabbed her and pulled her to you, giving her a kiss on the head. That was a feeling that can't be explained for me. Only to say that it was very special to us. I regret that I didnt have my camera with me, for that will be one of our greatest memories of all time. Thank you. Were hoping to see you again soon. Peace and Zambi!

i first heard of vassar from old and in the way, and since then i've tried to find all i could about vassar clements--luckily i found this website--i fortunately got to see him perform-though on television-i used to live in huntington, WV and every thursday night on kentucky public television, they had bluegrass night, and showed lived performances from the region--well, i had decided to tape that night, after having forgotten to watch the program for a couple of weeks, and lo and behold, here's vassar clements with this band, i can't remeber what they're called--there was a guy wailing on the flute, clarinet and sax, a guy on the keyboards who also played an accordian, a guy playing electric guitar who also wailed, and a guy playing stand up bass who was rocking it out, too--i have to say at first i was kind of skeptical because i figured, hey, this guy's getting older, and he can't be as good as he once was, but was i wrong--it seems that vassar has only gotten better with age--i took the tape up to morgantown with me on a visit to see some friends who play banjo and madolin, and we watched it together, and my friend dave, who is a genius on banjo, made the comment that it's like vassar is playing the fiddle like you would whistle, you know, like he can hit any note he wants whenever he wants, sliding on everything in between--he just plays it like he feels it through his whole body--i was amazed, really at the performance i only have this to add--i think vassar clements is one of the legends of this century because of his vast range of style, as well as his command of his instrument thanks a lot i hope people are listening to vassar for centuries to come p.s.-i think vassar's version of orange blossom special is the best around--he's throwing wagner in there from flight of the valkyries, absolutely amazing

I was reminded of a Jerry Garcia inspired bluegrass band that played briefly in the early '70's. I got to talking with one of them "Dead Heads" and he didn't know anything about this. I KNEW I saw this band back then, "Old And In The Way" perform a couple of times in the Santa Cruz area. The search was on. What the heck was that fiddle player that the other musicians, including Garcia and David Grisman were gushing over and made such an impression on audiences of "hippies" back then? I tried all the normal internet search engines and sited, Rolling Stone, no dice, all the places like excite and yahoo. Nothing. Then, tonight I tries another search engine and POW, up comes this website. Thank you Vassar Clements for playing such memorable music those many years ago and exposing thousands of rock and rollers on the west coast to the creativity and spontaneity of bluegrass music. I will never forget. I hope you make it out to the west coast sometime soon. Sincerely, Tom Evans

My family really enjoyed your show at Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI. I want to know the name of the song you sang, something like "Blues for Dixie" and where I might find a recording of it. Since last Saturday, I have checked out your recordings from the public library. Even the teenagers (who were skeptical) are loving it. Thanks again. The Abrahamsons

Hello to Vassar, Midge, and George! Midge, it was great to talk to you yesterday, and I can't wait to see ya'll in Nashville on the 1st. Vassar, I wanted to let you know that David Blackmon is doing amazingly well! His recovery from paralysis from the neck down is nothing short of a miracle, and I watched him perform with his old bandmates in Blueground Undergrass. It truly moved me to watch what was unfolding on the stage at the Georgia Theater in Athens, GA. I just wanted you to know that, and I can't wait to see ya next week, not to mention, of course, down at HarvestFest all weekend long in Fairburn! Have a good'un, and I'll see ya soon!

Hey everybody!!! It's just me. Midge, when are you guys coming back down to Athens? I haven't seen you in a while, and I really miss ya'll. Tell Vassar, and my Lil' Buddy George, that I said, "Hi!" Call me soon, and let me know when I can expect to see you again. Tell George to bring his guitar too... Oh, yeah, tell Vassar that we need to record "House of the Rising Sun". It just might be a "killer"... It's worth a try(?) That part he plays is so unusual and sweet for that song. Mixed with my "bluesy" voice, it just might be good chemistry... Love you all very much & forever, Britt & Janice Hendon

Dear Vassar: Your music and your playing has meant a lot to me for a long time...I first heard your violin on the original Old and In The Way record. I never saw the band with Jerry playing banjo, but I did see the reunion at the Warfield Theater here in SF for David Grisman's Birthday Bash a few years ago. I tell you, I was a very happy man that night. Seeing you play, with such clarity and creativity, well, I had a little tear in my eye and shivers down my spine. I say this only because it's true...your performance was an inspiration that night. I ordered a couple of cd's today...George and I had a very pleasant conversation and he took my order. Please come play here in San Francisco; there is a vibrant and active acoustic music scene here nowadays, and I am sure your shows would be well-received. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful music that I have enjoyed for so many years. Best, Jon Toby

09/02/29-07/12/98 "IN MEMORY" Two years ago today at the age of "68" we lost someone very precious & dear to us, a WIFE & MOM. It was to an unexpected illness of lung cancer. When MOM was diagnosed on March 5, 1998 the doctor gave her 3 to 6 months to live & that was with chemo treatments. She fought hard to live but GOD was ready to take her from us to a better place. PAPA, GEORGE & I were with MOM when she died on Sunday, July 12, 1998. A day that will always stand vivid in my mind. Those we love & cherish can NEVER really leave us, yet the sadness & void still remain. I feel MOM'S presence on a daily basis to guide me in helping PAPA. So MOM, even though there will be much sadness in my heart especially today thinking back of that dreadful Sunday, you already know & can be sure you've raised a grateful child who will "ALWAYS LOVE & RESPECT" you. I'll always have my priceless & treasured memories of you! You're my "MOM & my HERO" & I've adored you for 48 years of my life. With much love & devotion. MIDGE

Vassar, remember our Alaska tours? The winter one was best.. Riding in the van from Fairbanks to Valdez??? We actually wrote a great fiddle song on our mandolins. We picked through two whiteouts all the while Greg kept driving! I remember you hated that 40 below weather but what a trooper you were. Never complaining, always a perfect gentlemen to everyone you met. Do you still hate Cheese? How about a milk shake? Sure wish we could have gotten Millie to Maui... I loved the way she said How-why-ya... It is time to get Jake and Misty together again, this summer perhaps? I'll be looking forward to seeing you in Door County, Wisconsin. Hello old friend. You have been greatly missed. At the same time, I think that you have missed us too. At least I hope so. Things are well. Times they are a'changin'!!! I have to tell you how proud I am of Gene. Trust this you are proud too!!! With all my heart I wish for the two of you to be together again. I couldn't begin to tell you how much it would do for Gene's heart and soul. He (We) love you dearly. I know you remember our girls, Nikki and Sarah. You never had the chance to be around Sarah, but you did Nikki. You would be so proud!!! It seems we have a prodigy on our hands!! This child makes her daddy's chin drop to the floor. I think you would have a hard time keeping yours off the ground!!! Like you she is self taught and plays by ear. Let me tell you what an ear she has!!!! She's playing electric guitar and acoustic. And she sings like the ANGELS!!! Millie would love it. This coming Sunday she has her first paying gig. She's going to be playing with her daddy. I can't wait!!!!!! I need to go for now. I hope this message finds you. By the way, you need to have some pictures of Misty in the Photo Gallery. Please get in touch. With All My Love, Cindy Watson

I met Vassar when he played with his group many years ago, at the Woodbury Ski and Raquet club. I was a young teen and very excited, enough so that I am sure that I annoyed him greatly with my ravings. At the time, I honestly felt that he was worthy of much greater venues, and he inspired me to play my own music with a new eye. It is a good thing that great talents do indeed perform in modest settings. Since that time I have loved jazz, particularly jazz fusion, as though it was part of my own breath. I put together my own banjo at eight, but, wow, did I really experiment with sound, after meeting this true artist. Thank you, Vassar

It is hard to put in words how much your friendship, kindness, and encouragement means to us. You are such a fine, kindhearted christian person. You have inspired me to play harder on the fiddle and have brought warmth and love into the hearts of me, Denise, and your little fiddle buddy Kayla. Eventho I am her grandpa, she still thinks you are the best fiddle player in the world. I hope you have a wonderful birthday and I know you will, because you have a wonderful daughter and son-in-law, and thousands of friends to make it happen. We hope to see you soon and we send our love. Kayla sends a big hug to her favorite Fiddle Buddy.

PAPA: EACH YEAR ON APRIL 25TH I TRY & FIND THE CARD THAT EXPRESSES "ALL" THE THINGS THAT COME TO MIND ON YOUR BIRTHDAY. THE CARDS I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND ARE INADEQUATE IN LETTING YOU KNOW HOW MUCH LOVE THERE IS IN EVERY THOUGHT OF YOU. PAPA, SINCE MOM'S DEATH & MY HELPING YOU CAME ABOUT, IS STILL SUCH A VERY SMALL TOKEN OF MY APPRECIATION, THANKS & PRIDE I HAVE FOR YOU. AND YES, MY OVER-PROTECTIVENESS WILL CONTINUE EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE ANOTHER YEAR OLDER...WHEN A PAPA IS THE WONDERFUL & CHERISHED PERSON YOU ARE, THEN THERE ISN'T MUCH LEFT TO BE SAID OTHER THAN, "I LOVE YOU" & HAVE A HAPPY "72ND" BIRTHDAY TODAY!!! JUST REMEMBER WHAT MOM ALWAYS SAID: "AGE IS JUST A NUMBER & HERS WAS UNLISTED", UNFORTUNATELY YOUR AGE ISN'T...ALWAYS REMEMBER, GOD HAS BLESSED YOU IN MANY WAYS!!! WITH MUCH LOVE & DEVOTION...MIDGE

Nice to see your web page, Vasser (& Millie) I found some info last weekend while rummagging in an Antique store. There was a picture of a violin very simular to yours. The violin makers name was Di Salo. You might want to investigate the name. He was mentioned along with the greats. Thought about you, and remembered your help on "La Petite Juenne Filles" that you recorded for me in Minneapolis. Best Wishes, Gil LeDuc

Hello Vassar- this is Edward Hunter, fiddler for Blueground Undergrass. I just want to thank you for letting us play with you at the Roxy in Atlanta on April 7. That show will always be the highlight of our career because of your incredible musicianship and generous nature. I know I didn't have any business being onstage with you, but you made me feel welcome and I'll always be grateful to you. Thank you also for the great workshop with Tara Nevins at Suwannee Springfest back in late March. Your playing and talking was thrilling to the crowd, and I'm so glad I was there. I just returned home from Nashville where I had the honor to play three bluegrass songs with Vassar in a small club just outside of town. It was an experience I will never forget, and I want to thank him for the opportunity. I was born in 1977, after he had done a lot of his important work, but in 1993 when I became introduced to bluegrass, he was the first fiddle player I ever listened to when playing with Garcia, Grisman, Roan, and the rest of the boys on the "High Lonesome Sound" recording. I have been playing banjo for almost three years now, and I have come to really enjoy the sound of a a five string banjo along with a fiddle, and playing "Bill Chetam" and "Old Joe Clark" with Vassar on Saturday night was truely a dream come true. Hopefully next time I wont be so nervous and will be able to the songs justice! Anyway, thanks again Vassar, and I will keep in touch as I hope you will too!

VASSER, JUST THOUGHT I'D DROP YOU A LINE AND LET YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WE ENJOYED PLAYING WITH YOU AT THE BARTLETT PERFORMING ARTS CENTER. YOU ARE TRUELY A GREAT MUSICIAN, FRIEND AND A WONDERFUL CHRISTIAN MAN. THE ONLY THING I FEEL SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IS THE FACT THAT YOU DON'T WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT WHEN MIDGE DRIVES. NOT THAT SHE SPEEDS, BUT SOMETIMES (WELL ALL THE TIME) WHEN SHE'S DRIVING SHE TALKS CONSTANTLY. I FEEL THIS MAY INHIBIT HER DRIVING ABILITY. I KNOW THAT GEORGE KNOWS THIS, BUT BEING THE GOOD HUSBAND THAT HE IS, HE MADE THE WISE CHOICE LONG AGO, NOT TO SAY ANYTHING. I JUST THOUGHT I WOULD DROP YOU A LINE AND HOPEFULLY GIVE YOU A GOOD LAUGH. HOPE I SUCCEEDED. GOD BLESS AND KEEP IN TOUCH. SEE YA AT THE CRACKER BARRELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a chance to pick in Earl's basement with Stevie and a few others when I was very young. Just looking into that recording room and knowing what had been caught on tape there for the Circle album had a profound affect on me. I have enjoyed your music since the first time I laid ears on it. Thanks and my prayers are with you and your family.

Mr. Clements, Love your music. Very impressed with this website. I think you probably have one of the most fascinating instruments in the music industry along with Tony Rices guitar. Have had the honor of seeing you play up close at the Big Apple Bluegrass Festival. I play in a young bluegrass band called 2nd Edition. We played at the Big Apple Fest the past 2 years and felt awed to be in the same room with you. Looking forward to seeing and hearing you next time. Alan Bartram

First of all let say your website is classy. I am very concerned though when you say that Clements is the father of hillbilly Jazz. This is not correct and I will tell you why so you can research it.Before western swing was known as such it was known as Hillbilly Jazz (circa appx 1920 to 1940)The reason that it was called Hillbilly Jazz was musician like Milton Brown and Bob Wills and eventally many others by virtue of logistics hired jazz instrumentalists from New Orleans to play their western style or "hillbilly" music. The idea was to offer their music in keeping with the big band genre of Paul Whiteman,Fletcher Henderson,Earl Hines and King Oliver. These boys were all the rage when it came to dance bands.Guys like Wills ,Brown,Bill Boyd wanted to play their western dance music with a big band sound.New Orleans is close in proximity to Oklahoma and Texas which were the two areas that produced the majority of hillbilly jazz dance bands. The reason for hiring jazz musicians was to increase the marketability of the bands which heretofore had been limited to guitar,Piano ,banjo, bass and occasionally a clarinet.By using fullfledged accomplished brass and orchestral intrument players from around New Orleans the bands could expand exponentially there repetoir of western music along with current hits of the day.The end result was more gigs ,more recordings.....more money and exposure. This music was known as hillbilly Jazz until world war two when it began to be referred to as "western swing". Dear country music friend I am regularly writing for the Finnish country music magazine WUM and I`m reviewing albums and writing articles of all possible subjects connected with country music . I am also arranging radio air-play for country releases in local radio stations. I am 46 years old , started to work with country music journals here in Finland after hearing Johnny Cash in the Finnish radio for the first time in late 60`s. During the years I have written a lot of articles of the artists and styles in country music and reviewed a lot of recordings. If you feel like interested in having your releases reviewed and played in local radio stations, please, contact me: (Please, MARK them as FREE review-copies, NO VALUE). Hi Vassar, I saw you last week when you performed at the Barnes & Noble bookstore on Hilton Head Island. I have always been passionate about the violin and finally decided (as a 46 year old woman!) to learn to play it. My husband bought me a violin for my birthday last year and although I wanted to learn and study classical stuff, the "fiddle" music is so much fun to play! I've only been playing for about 7 months now but my teacher says I'm doing remarkably well for someone who just started as an adult. The way I look at it, by the time I retire from my job I will have been playing for 20 years! Do you think there's any hope for me? : ) Keep up the good work!

Dear Mr. Clements, I wanted to just say what an inspiration you've been to me as a young fiddler.I understand from "Wormy,"that you showed "Snake Roberts" quite a bit about playing a fiddle, and I have neared alot from Bill which plays for Wormy Pierce and James Rogers. Very soon I will take his place much like he look Snake's. I don't mean to get too far off the subject, but I just wanted to say how much I admire your talent, and if I am half as succesfull as you hae been I will be truely happy in my life. Thank You

Hi! I am 29 and just picked up the fiddle. I have been playing music all my life. I was raised by my Grandfather who played the fiddle quite well. He told me that if I had ever decided to play the fiddle to pay alot of attention to you. Although it has been 7 years since he went with God, I still remembered your name, and I am glad I did. I guess I just wanted to thank you for your contribution to his and now my life. I am very grateful.
