I have your two cd's "Encore coll..." and "Grass routes", which I like very much, and my neigbour Tauno, 85 years old fiddle player likes too, and he delight of your beutiful fiddle and of cource your playing. I'm very happy that you had played so many country and rock star like Ricky Betts, Jerry Garcia and his band GD, John McEuen and NGDB, "Will the circle be unbroken" is one of the greatest album, by the way did you know Jerry's friend Tom Fogerty of CCR. I'm very sorry that you have lost your beautiful wife Millie, and Midge's "dedicated to my mom" was very touchful. I read it on your website, which I got yesterday. And John Hartford is dead, he was your good friend, isn't it, very good musician. I've lost my baby. Why the all good people must die? Vassar, hope You find out and I'd was so very happy if you could answer me by E-mail (by the way, when you'll come to Finland. This was in July. I´ve order "Old & in the Way" two cd`s. Always enjoyed your version of "House of the Rising Sun" on the Mike Auldridge LP, which you reprised so well on Mark O'Connor's CD. Saw you at the Wayne Center for the Arts in Wooster, Ohio several years ago and was amazed at your inventive, and apparently effortless, improvisations on "Paddy on the Turnpike." After your solo, I felt that the tune should be renamed "Vassar on the Highway." Thanks for all the good music you've given us over so many years!

Dear Vassar and Family, Been catching shows these past few years starting with the Florida Folk Festival and the Rock & Roll Show Opening. What great musical times those were. We are all hoping to see you in Florida again. And we are also waiting for a new CD; don't you have a musical anniversary in '02? Like 60 years as a pro? Should be an album commemorating such a righteous accomplishment! How about "Vassar Rocks!" which is what our kids say when we play Back Porch Swing and Full Circle. The young'uns have caught on, too. Just wanted to say "Hi" and say we are looking forward to our next opportunity to hear you play. Please stay healthy and best to all, Jolene and the girls in Gainesville

I guess "they" call me the rogue fiddler in these parts. I'd be hurt 'cept followed closely on the heels of that comment was somethin' 'bout me usin' Vassar licks. I take that as a supreme compliment. But, I honestly didn't know that I was. I just play what sounds right to me. I have however, been enchanted by Vassar for more than 25 years. So, maybe some of it rubbed off. When are you ever commin' to Washington state? A devoted fan. Cindy

I have listened to your music and studied the book that has "Stumble" in it for 15 years. I am finally able to play some of the music and at 63 am still hoping to learn to play even more of your arrangements. Your artistry with the violin speaks volumes about life.

In the 1970's I was a late blooming student at the University of Wisconsin. Bluegrass music was very popular with a number of festivals in the midwest. It didn't get any better though than listening to the great Vassar Clements at a place called Good Kharma on State Street. A glass of carrot juice and some of the best fiddling I'd ever heard. If I recall you played there quite often and maybe resided in the area for awhile. Long live one of the greatest!

Dear Vassar, Hearing just today of Millie's passing, I feel very fortunate to have had the moments talking with her on the phone. Always eager to share a little 'inside news' from the homefront;(John & Dr.Hartford & the river!);and a little 'silliness' in Athens when we were all together @ The Morton Theater summer of '96. I sent a card this July w/pic of Maranda, sans fiddle. We both send our X's & O's. Next time you are on the road, I promise to find a sitter for my pup, so I can pitch my tent! At Grass Valley(Calif)Fest., everyone spoke so highly of you, I had to assure them that your feet always touch the ground! Next time, let's talk more about the orange groves. For you, nothing less than the best. XO, F

Vassar, we sure did enjoy speaking with you in Seattle, on Labor Day. The photo is in our living room and Tom's autographed birthday CD "Three August Nights" is on the player! Another great set of songs. I just have to say "Old and in the Way" is still my favorite record. We look forward to catching your act in our area again. Your daughter was also a very friendly and helpful person on the phone and email. I won't say what she said about "Cousins in Carolina" but I think you do a fine job of singing. Take care, Barb & Tom

This makes 2 years in a row we've bumped into one another on Sunday morning! It is such a thrill to hear you play, as your music has been with me since I was a young boy, and I want you to know how much we all love and appreciate you and your music. Harvest Festival was such a feast for the spirit and I loved all the music! But... hands down...my favorite set of the festival --you with everybody! hee! No --really --my favorite was you with Col. Bruce and the Codetalkers with Ike Stubblefield on keyboard! "Let it rock, let it roll, let it flow" --and you did! Thanks so much! Wonderful to see you, Midge & George. Hope you're warm again! Glad Magnolia Festival is only 3 weeks away!

Dear Vassar, A friend sent us Back Porch Swing and what a surprise. Things are pretty quiet here in the Northlands so this is a big deal. We both thought we had heard it before but we must have been thinking of "Encore" or "Telluride" because it is all new to us. What a band! Now we understand why you like horns so well. The arrangements are as good as the musicians and singers. Sure hope you make more CD's with this wonderful "Little Big Band" and that we will get to hear you play together in person. Thanks for the delightful music and memories. God Bless, Andy and Josh

Hey Vassar, It was wonderful getting to meet you and visit a bit before the show at Devil's Head. I will e-mail you the pictures I talked about from twenty some years ago! We also took lots of new pictures at this show. It was great hearing you play again, especially when you joined David and the band for their first set. What a surprise when we saw you come back out for the Dark Star Orchestra set too! "Ripple" sounded so sweet! Thank you for a wonderful show, I'm glad my children were able to get the opportunity to see you as well. Take care, and if you're ever out our way, there's a great Fiddler's Picnic Jam every year here, it would be awesome to have you play at that.

Dark Star Jam was an amazing show. I played violin for a couple years, so I have a little better understanding of what it takes to be at the level Vassar's at. His fiddlin', quite frankly, amazed me. He was kind enough to sign my ticket stub, shirt, and Full Circle album (purchased there, at Vassar's recommendation). :) Anyway, just hope Vassar looks at this. Thanks, ray

BY THE INFORMATION WE HAVE RECEIVED, THE MESSAGES MAY READ SOMETHING LIKE "PROPERTIES OWNED BY VASSAR CLEMENTS", "CONTRACTS", OR "HI! HOW ARE YOU? I SEND YOU THIS FILE IN ORDER TO HAVE YOUR ADVICE. There is a nasty worm infecting computers and I believe friends of Vassar as well as BGUG may have become victims of this computer worm ..if you know of anyone who has opened an email created by this worm..you can go to this web site for a download file which will fix the problem if you follow directions;;;the web site address is: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/ w32.sircam.worm@mm.html It uses your email address to send to your address book thereby spreading the worm...this was discovered on 7/17/01. hi vassar, i just want to say i saw you last night at in kannapolis nc, for the old and in the way reunion. i am truly honored to say that i was able to tape the whole event with my sony handycam and its pure majic. it came out great with pic and sound quality. i feel like i truly was able to capture a piece of living history and a true legend of not just blue grass but music period. i have seen hundreds of concerts in my life of all calibur musicians. but nothing stirred my soul like what i saw last night. i am grateful to have been there and to have taped such an event. i truly thank you for what you have done to change my life with your music, it has inspired me more than words can even say. i was also able to tape you last year with stir fried at the smile festival in nc. as a writer of music myself this has given me such a feeling of majic and music and all that is real, and makes me realize just what i need to be doing more of in my life. i wish you the best and hope that i can see you again sometime. i would go to knoxville tonight but they dont allow taping so im not sure. but you are truly a beautiful man in and out of your music. my reguards about your wife she was such an inspiration to you i know but im sure shes still very much alive and with you and your family.... may all of the peace, love, and joy in the universe be with you always. i guess youll always be old and in the way, but shining brighter than any star and never fade. your friend todd...

Mr Clements; I had the extreme honor of chatting with you after a show/dance just a few nights before Fan Fair officially started. I was one of two guests of Harry Wade's that evening. If you remember, my friend, Hubert sang at the end of the jamboree and I took pictures of the three of you along with Bob Saxton, and I do treasure it so. Sir, meeting you will always be one of the biggest thrills of my life and I'll always be grateful for the time you took to speak with me. I do know in my heart that we will cross paths again. My songwriting adventures have just begun so when we meet, it will surely be another wonderful memory for me. I will try to catch one of your performances in the near future, hopefully when I return to Nashville. Until then, Mr. Clements, take care and please continue to add joy to our lives with your talent. I'll always be a faithful fan - Debbie

Vassar and Midge, I ordered a couple of CDs for my Mom's birthday, and y'all thoughtfully added a third disc, free of charge, to her order. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this ... almost as much as I appreciate the wonderful music and musicians on those CDs! As an amateur traditional musician myself, Vassar is one of my great inspirations, and it is a pleasure (though not a surprise) to find that the business side of his music runs as personably and genuinely as the music itself. Thanks again; be assured that I will be back to vassarclements.com often and that I'll keep ordering music from the greatest fiddler in the world. I'm looking forward to your August tour dates in Maine, and I'll hope to see you in Lubec or Machias, if not both. Yours, Barrett Taylor

Dear Vassar, Hero to Fiddlers Everywhere: A funny story: I came by "The Fiddle According to Vassar" by a strange set of events. A couple years ago, my son-in-law's grandfather, a humble farmer in North Dakota, passed away, leaving a copy with his name on it among his things. A year or so later, my son-in-law, knowing my passion for the fiddle, and somewhat confused, in that he was certain his grandpa never actually played, passed it on to me. I LOVE "Good Woman's Love"!!! However, I suck at trying to learn from sheet music (which I've found) or watching videos. So...where can I find an audio copy so I can work on it by the only means that seems to work, by "listening it to death"?? And yeah, great site. Thanks.

I met Vassar when he was working with Leon Russell in the early 80's....& our paths crossed again in late 1998. He was working with the Blotter Boys, & I was recovering & rehabbing from the effects of a stroke. Vassar's kind words of encouragement prompted me to "get back in the saddle" & do what the Lord had been urging me to do. I'm back to fiddlin' the blues again, but this time around I'm doing it all for the Lord... & my version of "Jesus Loves Me" has been at or near the top of MP3's Christian Blues Chart since early spring of this year. Thank you, Vassar...you'll never know how much a kind word from you has affected my life. I'm bluesifyin' for an awesome God, Dave Foraker

I've played all kinds of music over the last 30 odd years. After work the other day I turned the radio on NPR and a song was just beginning. I thought I recognized the chord pattern but couldn't place the tune. Imagine my surprise when after the intro the chords magically turned into "White Room" like I'd never heard it before, but then again unbelievably similar to the way I'd always heard it before! I almost had to pull off the road, and I've never had to do that before. It was great. It's as simple as that. It was great.

I am sad to say that I had to miss this years Florida Folk Festival, which my dear friend Kennith Crawford puts on. He has been dying for me to meet mr. clements. I've been dying for that chance as well, ever since I first heard Will The Circle Be Unbroken! I never knew that Vassar Clements made an instructional tape. I'm on my way to the "merchandise" section to order it. Thank you very much, Mr. Clements for all the hours and years of enjoyment you have given me. I played violin from the time I was about 6 'till I was 22. Then I quit music altogether. Now, 29 years later I was given "the circle" CD, heard the music, and remembered how much fun I had playing that music and playing in a band. I appreciated the opportunity to meet you at Merlefest & though I did not hear you live, I have heard your playing on several albums. You may not remember, but you helped my little 3 yr. old son get a drink of water under the artist relation's tent at Hillside stage. I introduced myself to you, & it was an honor to meet you. I play guitar, banjo, and am learning the fiddle, so I have repect for the "masters" who have paid their dues, put in the time to pave the way for the rest of us to enjoy good music! God Bless!

Happy birthday Vassar Clements! It turns out that we share a birthday, except that I'll be 24. I had the pleasure of meeting you and having my picture taken with you just before your workshop with David Grisman and Peter Rowan at Suwanee Springfest. It never fails, every time I hear you play I get goose bumps. I look forward to seeing you at Smilefest. Also, Vassar, are you still planning on playing with Peter Rowan and Tony Rice at the Ryman on July 19? I noticed it isn't on the "Tour Dates" section of your website. It's hard to put into words, but I will attempt it. When I first started playing banjo in 1978 I listened to Will the Circle Be Unbroken and for the first time heard Vassar. Then I finally got into radio in 1986 and started playing the best in bluegrass and most of the sessions were done by Vassar. Then Bela starts recording an amazing amount of a VERY progressive material and there he is again Vassar. Then I discoved Old and in the Way in the Late 80's because some hippie kept calling my show to hear it. So I thought ok, i'll play it and through that discovered the Grateful Dead and everything related. I had just started playing with Bruce Hampton at the time and my mind was expanding beyond belief. I look on the cd cover of Old and in the Way and there he is again, Vassar ! Then my friend Sharon Wiggins and I promoted a show with New Grass Revival at the Moonshadow Saloon in Atlanta in 1986 and in walks Vassar and Millie and Vassar put a hillbilly band together to open. It was great. Who is this guy? Then I found out he played with Bill Monroe as I recieved compilations of Monroes early material in the mail at the radio station. There he is again Vassar. What is the guy ? How old is he? Is he a franchised operation? Surely. Then I discover the Dave Holland /Grapelli stuff and think to myself, there he is again. Do what? I had just seen Grappelli on Johnny Carson that week. Is this the same guy? Then in 1999 I meet him again after starting Blueground Undergrass and find out that he is one of the most wonderfully humble and talented musicians of our time. No one has yet done a proper retrospective of the career of this man Vassar. He is my true example of what I want to be as a person and what I want my music to say to people. I love you my friend and feel silly even trying to express my gratitude for your presence here on this earth. peace to you. "rev" Jeff Mosier - Blueground Undergrass

Hi Vassar, Midge & George--missed you all last weekend in Live Oak, but it fell on the weekend that I had to close my store for the last time. As you might notice, I've taken it online...should be up shortly. I'm also taking on a radio show here in Auburn, afternoon drive time and I get to program it myself, so you can guess it's going to be different & better than most of the radio out there. I have some Vassar to play but contact me 'cause I could use some more! Anyway, hope to see you all at Smilefest in NC in June...and hope you are all well & fine. Mrs. & Lil' Washboard send their love & best wishes along with mine! your pal, Wildman Steve

Hi Vasser and Midge-we certainly enjoyed the show this past weekend at the fesitival in Live Oak (can't spell the event name). The music was terrific-we did not stay for Sunday but Dennis and Kim said that the performances were even better than the previous day in spite of the bad weather. We hope that the Divinity hit the spot. Look forward to seeing you perform again at the Magnolia Fest.

I see that there's a 'bluegrass reunion' at Grey Fox festival this summer. I don't how I'll be able to get of work those days...but I've got to do some scheming and get there! Hope to make it at least for a couple days. Be sure and let us all know when that new release is out! Looking forward to it. Thanks,

Dear Vassar: I am always happy to see that we, Melivin Goins and Windy Mountain, will be playing a show with you. Throughout the years, you have been one of my heroes, joining the likes of Don Reno and Red Smiley, Charlie Waller, Bill Monroe, etc. I hope to meet you along the road again. Melvin just bought a new bus with a giant MG logo on the back. Now and then, while I'm driving, I'll get a shout on the ole CB from folks who think they are following Mickey Gilley. HA! Melvin and Ray Goins will be inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame at Bean Blossom this summer. I've traveled with them for 17 years and think these two fine players will join their peers. God bless and keep you. John McNeely ~ Bluegrass Music

i began to play the fiddle about five years ago, a long time after i first heard you. last year, at smilefest in nc, i was able to play a couple of numbers with you on harmony. i was the one with the red fiddle. it is stands as one of the greatest musical experiences i have had to date. i really, really appreciated the way you treated me as a fellow fiddler. i hope to make it back to smilefest so we can get in touch again. you, along with all the other great fiddlers that ive come in touch with from time to time have provided a wellspring of inspiration that i hold so incredibly dear to my heart. the only way i know how to deal with such a gift is to share it with others. thank you.
